Systems Thinking Case Study #8:
Systemic structures that controls student defiance!
HOW COME STUDENTS CONTINUE TO DEFY AND APPEARS HARDER TO DISCIPLINE,
DESPITE EFFORTS TO TAKE DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS ON SUCH STUDENTS?
DIALOGUE NOTES:  WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING?

  • "I spend more time to correct students' behaviour or taking time to talk through their problems rather than
    presenting the curriculum"
  • "Students these days are not like back at my time, we were not disrespectful" (yet one would hear this remark
    every generation!)
  • "The much older teachers are not spared, often ridiculed for not 'keeping up with the times!'"
  • "The younger ones are spared better but it is just a matter of time, before things get worse (not better)."
  • "Sometimes the problem is attributed to children coming from 'broken families', sometimes it is because of affluence
and they are 'cyberkids', sometimes the parents upbringing and values influence such behaviour as they are cared
for at all times and sometimes it is just sheer defiance."

SUMMARY OF KEY INSIGHTS:

  • "Letting the child grow up!

HIGH LEVERAGE STRATEGIES:

  • Remember the law 'harder one pushes, the harder the system (in this case, the
    students) pushes back

  • Become aware of the trap of falling into an escalation with the student.

  • Become aware what is happening today that is making it difficult for us to see
these structures on a day-to-day basis.
WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE IF WE LEARN TO APPLY THESE STRATEGIES?

WHAT MIGHT MAKE IT DIFFICULT OR GET IN THE WAY OF MAKING THESE HAPPEN?
